Check your Statutory Rates
April’s when the government updates minimum wage and statutory pay rates. It’s a great time to double-check your payroll systems and to update contracts to make sure everyone’s getting what they’re entitled to if their rates have changed.
Check out the other increases to sick pay, family-friendly policies (including maternity and paternity), and the new legislation on neonatal leave.
Review your Contracts and Policies
When was the last time you read through your company policies?
Now’s as good a time as any to make sure they still match how things are really working in the business today.
Getting everything up to date, ensuring the language is simple and easy for everyone to follow will help employees understand the expectations of the policies and how to use them when they need them most.
Check your Holiday Balances
Depending when your holiday year starts depends on what your spring clean action would be. If you’re part way through the holiday year then why not check how much holiday people have booked and taken against their entitlement and if they need a little nudge, remind them to start booking dates in.
If your holiday year has just begun then a quick review of balances is always good practice. Have you got a way to record absence for the coming year? How do you keep on track.
Remember, it’s so easy for people to build up leave over time, but long periods without breaks can lead to burnout and a mad rush at the end of the holiday year to use it not lose it.

Are they feeling supported? Are they engaged?
Take a moment to gather feedback and look for areas where you could improve employee wellbeing or boost morale.
It’s a small effort that makes a big difference in how your team feels.
Declutter your Files & Data
Give your HR files a good tidy-up! Review employee records to make sure all info is up to date. Clear out old documents that are no longer needed, and make sure everything’s secure. A bit of digital housekeeping goes a long way!
